Police foil fake ‘Obi of Lagos’ coronation, arrest four suspects
The Lagos State Police Command has arrested a 65-year-old man, Engr. Chibuike Azubike, for allegedly parading himself as the “Obi of Lagos” and attempting to stage an unlawful installation ceremony.
Azubike, said to be from Obodoukwu Ancient Kingdom in Ideato North Local Government Area of Imo State, was apprehended alongside three alleged accomplices — Chief Chibuzor Ani (57), Chief Martins Nwaodika (65) and Mr. Ikechukwu Franklin Nnadi (41).
Police spokesman, DSP Babasayi Oluseyi, in a statement yesterday, said intelligence reports revealed the suspects had concluded plans to unveil a prototype of a supposed ₦1.5 billion “Palace of Obi of Lagos State” on Saturday, September 13, at Apple Hall, Amuwo Odofin.
He said operatives from the Command, supported by the Eko Strike Force and other tactical units, stormed the venue to stop the event and maintain public peace.
“All four suspects are in custody at the Lagos State Police Command Headquarters, Ikeja. Investigation is ongoing, and they will be charged to court accordingly,” Oluseyi stated.
Commissioner of Police, CP Olohundare Jimoh, warned the public against impostors seeking to exploit revered cultural institutions for personal gain, stressing that such acts are unlawful and capable of disturbing public peace.
“The Command will not hesitate to enforce the law firmly and decisively against any individual or group engaging in acts that undermine legality, public order, and the integrity of the state,” the CP said.
