FG inaugurates committee for Nigeria’s 65th Independence celebration

The Federal Government has inaugurated an Inter-ministerial Committee to oversee preparations for Nigeria’s 65th Independence Day anniversary.

Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, who inaugurated the committee yesterday in Abuja, said the celebration was not only to reflect on the past but also to chart a course for the future.

“This anniversary is a reminder of where we are coming from and where we are going as a nation. Though we have faced political, economic and social challenges, we have continued to overcome them,” he said.

Akume urged Nigerians to recommit themselves to nation-building, stressing that every citizen must feel valued and empowered to contribute to national progress.

According to a statement by the Director of Information and Public Relations in the SGF’s office, Segun Imohiosen, activities for the anniversary will begin with a world press conference on September 25. A Juma’at service and women’s activities will follow on September 26, youth programmes and a historical arts exhibition on September 27, and a church service on September 28.

A public lecture has been fixed for September 29, while the celebrations will climax with the Presidential Broadcast and Independence Day parade on October 1.

In addition, the SGF unveiled the Nigeria @65 Compendium Project Workstation, an initiative of CherryAfrica Magazine in collaboration with the SGF’s office. The project, designed as a media hub, will feature interviews with key government officials on their contributions to national development in line with the Renewed Hope Agenda.

The compendium, according to the organisers, will document the nation’s historical journey from pre-colonial times to the present, highlighting milestones across government institutions, the economy and other critical sectors.

Nigeria gained independence from Britain on October 1, 1960, and has since marked the occasion annually with parades, cultural events, interfaith services and a presidential address.
