Benue Traditional Council Denies Revocation of Titles Linked to President Tinubu

The Idoma Area Traditional Council (IATC) of Benue State has dismissed claims that President Bola Tinubu’s name was involved in the recent suspension of chieftaincy titles within Idoma land.

The Secretary to the paramount ruler of the council, Adegbe Uloko, clarified in a statement on Tuesday that neither President Tinubu nor the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) were included in any list of nominees submitted for traditional honours.

The controversy arose following media reports suggesting that the president’s chieftaincy title had been nullified after the council issued a directive suspending all traditional title conferments. The suspension, first announced on 19 August and reinforced on 2 September, was described as a general measure aimed at ensuring proper vetting and approval of all nominations.

Uloko emphasised, “At no time did the list submitted to the Idoma Area Traditional Council contain the name of the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria or that of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation.”

He explained that the first-class chief of Igede, HRH Ero Oga, was directed to halt all conferments pending formal approval from the IATC. The council said the suspension was not targeted at any individual but was intended to preserve cultural dignity, safeguard the throne, and prevent unapproved titles from creating confusion.

The council reiterated its commitment to upholding the sanctity of Idoma customs and promoting peace and development within Benue State.

By clarifying the matter, the IATC hopes to quell speculation, protect the reputation of the presidency, and reaffirm its authority over cultural affairs in Idoma land.
