FG, NABTEB launch comprehensive review of 26 trade syllabuses to reposition technical education

The Federal Government has intensified efforts to reposition Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) as a central pillar of national development, with the National Business and Technical Examinations Board (NABTEB) leading a comprehensive review of syllabuses across 26 trade areas in technical colleges.

The five-day review and validation exercise, which brings together education regulators, industry stakeholders, principals of technical colleges and curriculum experts, is aimed at aligning technical education with both domestic manpower needs and global competitiveness.

Registrar and Chief Executive of NABTEB, Dr. Mohammed Aminu Mohammed, described the reform as a landmark intervention in Nigeria’s educational and economic trajectory.

“This exercise reflects Nigeria’s deliberate strategy to make TVET a driver of national development. It is a significant step towards educational excellence and economic transformation, with the potential to reshape the landscape of technical education in our nation,” he said.

The trades under review span both traditional vocations and emerging technologies, including Robotics, Coding and Machine Learning, Industrial Mechanics, Smart Agriculture, Creative Media Production, Social Media and Digital Communications, Automotive Mechatronics, Solar PV Installations, Hospitality and Catering, Mechanised Agriculture, Cosmetology, and Fisheries and Aquaculture.

According to Dr. Mohammed, the inclusion of environmentally conscious programmes underscores Nigeria’s commitment to sustainable development. “By prioritising areas such as Smart Agriculture and Solar PV Installations, we are positioning the country as a leader in green technology adoption while tackling energy and food security challenges,” he noted.

He also highlighted the importance of collaboration, stressing that the review was made possible through strong inter-agency cooperation between NABTEB and the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE), as well as invaluable industry contributions.

“Our partners have provided critical insights into market demands and emerging trends, ensuring that the revised syllabuses are not only academically sound but also serve as practical roadmaps for career success,” he said.

On implementation, the NABTEB boss pledged that the board would provide comprehensive educator training, develop appropriate assessment tools and ensure quality assurance. He further appealed to industries to strengthen partnerships by offering internships, workplace learning opportunities and mentorship for technical students.

The exercise, which commenced this week, is scheduled to end on September 12, 2025. The revised syllabuses are expected to be deployed across technical colleges nationwide thereafter.
