Stakeholders Slam FG Over Abrupt Curriculum Rollout

Stakeholders Slam FG Over Abrupt Curriculum Rollout

Teachers and parents have criticised the Federal Government for the sudden introduction of the new national curriculum, warning that schools are unprepared and stakeholders were excluded from the process.

The concerns were raised during a virtual meeting, “Understanding the New Curriculum”, organised by the Concerned Parents and Educators Network. Participants said the rushed rollout could undermine learning quality.

Child Protection and Education Advocate, Taiwo Akinlami, described the process as “exclusionary,” noting that private school associations, teachers, parents, and students were not consulted.

“The sudden announcement left even educators learning about it at the same time as the public. This appears more political than educational,” Akinlami said.

He highlighted infrastructural gaps, particularly for ICT and agricultural subjects requiring laboratories, adding that public schools will struggle while private schools face rising costs without adjusting fees.

Parents also questioned how the reform addresses Nigeria’s 20 million out-of-school children, asking if alternative learning pathways or classrooms are being provided.

Curriculum expert Rhoda Odigboh acknowledged the reform’s benefits, including fewer subjects and the introduction of digital literacy and trade skills. But she warned success depends on preparation.

> “Many teachers lack digital literacy skills, and the education system is not fully equipped for this reform,” Odigboh said.

Dr. Salihu Yahaya of the Association of Nigerian Geographers urged professional bodies and school operators to engage with the government proactively to influence curriculum content.

Mrs. Yinka Ogunde, CPE convener and CEO of Edumark Consult, stressed collaboration and accountability:

“Teachers, parents, and associations must get involved. Our voices count, and we must hold government accountable.”
