Ogun PDP Chieftain, Hundreds of Supporters, Defect to APC

A prominent chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ogun State, Olusola Salau, has defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), bringing along hundreds of his supporters.

Salau, who also serves as South-West Chairman of The Alternative Movement, made the announcement in a statement issued to journalists in Abeokuta, the state capital, on Monday. He cited the disappointing voter turnout and the outcome of the recently concluded Remo Federal Constituency by-election as key factors in his decision.

“There is nothing more for Ogun State PDP. I have finally made up my mind to leave the party,” Salau said. “An experienced politician like me knows that the PDP has no future in Ogun State and across the Southwest. Enough is enough.”

While joining APC, Salau confirmed he will continue as the South-West Chairman of The Alternative Movement, a coalition committed to promoting democratic integrity and ideological clarity in Nigeria.

“I officially declare that I am no longer a PDP member,” he said. “We are moving in large numbers to join His Excellency, Prince Dapo Abiodun, and other progressives to strengthen APC.”

Salau’s defection follows similar moves by Kehinde Olaniyi Akinde, former PDP chairmanship candidate for Yewa North Local Government, who resigned last week citing injustice and internal wrangling within the party. Earlier, former PDP state chairman Dr. Sikirulahi Ogundele and 2023 deputy governorship candidate Abdulkabir Akinlade led hundreds of supporters to APC, accusing the party’s 2023 governorship candidate, Oladipupo Adebutu, of high-handedness.

The defections signal growing discontent within the PDP in Ogun State, raising questions about the party’s prospects ahead of future elections.
