Kano Sets Sights on Leading Nigeria in Voter Registration
Kano State Governor, Abba Yusuf, has directed a newly inaugurated task force to ensure that every eligible citizen in the state registers to vote, pledging to make Kano the top-performing state in voter registration nationwide.
Yusuf gave the directive after receiving briefings from the Task Force on Mobilisation for Voter Registration, emphasizing that the exercise is a critical step in deepening democracy and encouraging civic participation.
“I assure you of my full support in this assignment. Our goal is clear: no eligible citizen should be left out of the voter registration process,” the governor said.
Deputy Governor Aminu Abdussalam confirmed that the state government had engaged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to guarantee a smooth registration process.
Task force chairman Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya revealed that within two weeks of its inauguration, the committee had engaged traditional leaders, civil society organizations, local government chairmen, and councillors to recruit volunteers across Kano’s 484 wards. “This mobilisation is driven by patriotism and commitment to the development of our state,” he said.
Despite efforts, Kano currently lags behind in online pre-registrations, with only 10,166 registrants reported in August, compared to Lagos’ 222,205 and Osun’s 393,269. The task force is now intensifying efforts to close the gap and boost participation.
