Ekiti Elders Call for Peace, Development Ahead of 2026 Governorship Election
The Ekiti Council of Elders has urged all governorship aspirants and politicians in the state to prioritize peace and development over personal ambitions ahead of the 2026 elections.
In a statement issued Monday in Ado Ekiti by the Council’s President, Prof. Joseph Oluwasanmi; Public Relations Officer, Dr. Bayo Orire; and General Secretary, Elder Niyi Ajibulu, the elders expressed concern over rising political tensions and smear campaigns in the run-up to party primaries and the June 20, 2026, governorship election.
While acknowledging that criticism is essential for holding government accountable, the council warned against self-serving attacks that undermine societal progress. “All aspirants should channel their efforts towards growth and development rather than character assassination,” the statement said.
The elders commended the Oyebanji administration for its achievements in peace, infrastructure, and security, urging residents to cooperate with the government and avoid actions that could derail its initiatives.
On security, the council endorsed the establishment of State Police, noting its alignment with global best practices in crime control, while acknowledging the need for safeguards against abuse. They also welcomed the federal government’s Forest Guards initiative, urging all states to engage fully to protect law-abiding citizens.
