Tinubu Respects Rule of Law, Won’t Interfere in Kanu’s Trial – Aide

President Bola Tinubu will not interfere in the ongoing trial of the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, his aide has said.
The Senior Special Assistant to the President on Community Engagement (South-East), Mrs. Chioma Wesley, stated this while addressing State House Correspondents in Abuja after briefing the President at the Presidential Villa.
According to her, President Tinubu remains committed to upholding the rule of law and would allow the judiciary to conclude Kanu’s case without executive interference.
“Nnamdi Kanu’s case is before the court, and the President cannot make any pronouncement on it,” Mrs. Wesley explained.
“He abides strictly by the rule of law. For now, we will wait for the court to make its decision,” she added.
The Presidential aide’s remarks come amid renewed calls from various quarters for Kanu’s release from the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS).
Kanu, who was first arrested in 2015 and later granted bail in 2017, fled the country following a military operation in his hometown, Afaraukwu, Abia State. He was rearrested and extradited to Nigeria in June 2021, and has remained in DSS custody since then as his trial continues.
