The Social Democratic Party (SDP) has cautioned the United States government, led by former President Donald Trump, against any attempt to interfere in Nigeria’s internal affairs under the pretext of promoting religious freedom or humanitarian concerns.

In a statement on Monday, the SDP National Publicity Secretary, Rufus Aiyenigba, urged Washington to channel its concern over the spate of killings in Nigeria into practical military and intelligence support rather than political posturing.

The warning follows Trump’s recent designation of Nigeria as a “Country of Particular Concern” over alleged religious persecution, a move that has further strained diplomatic relations between Abuja and Washington.

While acknowledging the challenges facing Nigeria’s security agencies, the SDP emphasized that the country’s sovereignty remained sacrosanct.

“The SDP, as a national political party committed to the genuine interest of Nigeria, is deeply concerned by developments and discussions that appear to threaten the country’s sovereignty,” Aiyenigba said.

The party also expressed concern over the “underwhelming performance” of Nigeria’s security architecture, which it said had made the nation a subject of international scrutiny.
