Tinubu Seeks Senate Approval for Amupitan as INEC Chairman

President Bola Tinubu has forwarded a request to the Senate for the confirmation of Professor Joash Amupitan as the substantive Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

The President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, read the letter during plenary on Tuesday, alongside other communications from the Presidency seeking legislative approval for various appointments.

According to the correspondence, the nomination complies with the provisions of the 1999 Constitution (as amended).

Sources disclosed that the request has been referred to the Committee of the Whole for consideration.

If confirmed, Professor Amupitan will succeed the acting chairman who has been overseeing the affairs of the commission.

The development comes as political activities heighten ahead of the 2027 general elections, with several stakeholders urging early reforms within the electoral body.
