Ododo Shuts Illegal Trailer Parks Over Insecurity

Ododo Shuts Illegal Trailer Parks Over Insecurity

Kogi State Governor, Ahmed Usman Ododo, on Tuesday ordered the immediate closure of illegal trailer parks in Zariagi, Lokoja and Osara, Adavi Local Government Area, citing rising security threats.

The governor said intelligence reports revealed that the parks had become safe havens for criminals masquerading as truck drivers.

The one-month closure, which takes effect immediately, is part of measures to deny bandits and kidnappers operational bases across the state.

Ododo declared that his administration would not compromise the safety of citizens, stressing that the protection of lives and property was more important than the economic interests of a few operators.

“The importance of the well-being and security of residents of the state cannot be overemphasised. Together, we will build a Kogi where good health is a right, not a privilege; where security is guaranteed; and where every resident has a fair chance to live, work, and prosper,” he said.

The governor gave operators in the affected areas a month’s grace to vacate the sites, especially during restricted hours, and directed security agencies to enforce the order.

The move comes amid a resurgence of violent attacks in the state. Earlier this month, three policemen and two vigilantes were gunned down at a checkpoint in Egbe, Yagba West Local Government Area.

Political watchers say Ododo’s latest move is also a test of his leadership resolve, as the governor seeks to stamp his authority in a state battling criminal gangs and to prove he can sustain the legacy of his predecessor, now at the centre.
