Popular ARISE News Anchor Shot Dead in Abuja

The media community was thrown into mourning on Monday following the death of Somtochukwu Christelle Maduagwu, a popular news anchor with ARISE TV, who was reportedly shot during an armed robbery at her residence in Katampe, Abuja. She was 29 years old.

ARISE TV, in a statement signed by Hadiza Usman-Ajayi, described Maduagwu, affectionately known as “Sommie” by her colleagues, as “a vibrant and engaging journalist whose voice connected with viewers nationwide. She was a cherished member of the ARISE News family.”

The statement added, “Her voice may now be silent, but her passion, spirit, and professional legacy will endure. We call for a swift investigation, arrest, and prosecution of those responsible for this heinous act.”

Maduagwu was not only a seasoned broadcaster but also a trained lawyer. Colleagues remember her as a supportive friend and consummate professional who inspired many within and outside the newsroom.

The incident occurred in the early hours of Monday, and the Nigeria Police have launched an investigation. Efforts to obtain a response from the FCT Police Command regarding the progress of the probe were unsuccessful, as the command has yet to respond to inquiries.

The tragic killing of Maduagwu has elicited widespread shock and condolences across the media industry and from well-wishers nationwide.
