Kano seeks law to ban same-sex marriage, related activities

The Kano State Government has asked the House of Assembly to enact a law prohibiting same-sex marriage and activities associated with it.

The decision followed a resolution reached at the State Executive Council meeting on Wednesday.

Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Abduljabbar Mohammed Umar, in a statement, said the council urged lawmakers to back the move with legislation that would enforce a total ban across the state.

Kano, located in northern Nigeria, already operates under Islamic Sharia law, which forbids same-sex marriage and prescribes stiff penalties for offenders.

The government said the proposed law would strengthen existing measures and ensure that such practices are completely stamped out.
