Amaechi vows to resign if Nigeria sees no change within one year of ADC government
The Vice-Presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress, ADC, Rotimi Amaechi, has pledged to resign from office if Nigerians do not begin to see significant changes within one year of an ADC administration taking power in 2027.
Amaechi made the declaration during an interview on AIT’s Democracy Today programme on Wednesday.
He said an ADC government would prioritise security, education and the economy, while also tackling corruption, which he identified as a major obstacle to development.
“We must deal with three things. We must deal with security; we must deal with education; we must deal with the economy. And to do all that, corruption will have to come down because there’s no money for anybody to steal,” he said.
Amaechi also criticised the removal of the petrol subsidy by the Tinubu administration, arguing that Nigerians had not benefited sufficiently from the policy.
“President Tinubu remove subsidy, what are the benefits of subsidy? Subsidy money is in private pockets and they are celebrating,” he said.
On the economy, the ADC candidate expressed concern over what he described as Nigeria’s heavy dependence on imported finished goods.
“Who are those importing? Nigeria is in trouble,” he said.
Amaechi also spoke about poverty in the country, contrasting it with the level of spending he said he witnessed at some social events.
He questioned the source of funds being spent at such gatherings given the economic difficulties faced by many Nigerians.
The former Rivers State governor also referred to reports of Nigerians booing President Bola Tinubu during his arrival at the Lagos International Airport, saying an ADC administration would seek to change the situation.
“I watched people hoot at Tinubu from the Lagos International Airport to his house. If we become President, nobody will do that, they will be clapping for us because we will change Nigeria,” he said.
Amaechi’s pledge comes after FCT Minister Nyesom Wike recently said he would resign if he failed to deliver the FCT and Rivers State for President Tinubu in the 2027 presidential election.
Amaechi, however, said his own commitment would be tied to the performance of an ADC administration if elected.
“This time, I will say it. If Nigeria does not begin to change one year after we’ve come to office, come to me, I will resign,” he said.
