Oyo Assembly approves Makinde’s annual leave, deputy governor to act

The Oyo State House of Assembly has approved Governor Seyi Makinde’s request to proceed on his annual leave, with Deputy Governor Adebayo Lawal to oversee the affairs of the state during the period.

The approval was granted on Thursday after the House considered a letter from the governor in line with the provisions of the 1999 Constitution, which requires a governor to notify the State House of Assembly before proceeding on leave or being absent from office.

According to the letter, Makinde’s annual leave will commence on August 10 and end on September 11, 2026, while he is expected to resume official duties on September 14, 2026.

The letter was read during plenary by the Deputy Speaker, Muhammed Fadeyi, who presided over the session in the absence of the Speaker, Adebo Ogundoyin.

Following deliberations, the lawmakers unanimously approved the governor’s request and expressed confidence in the deputy governor’s ability to ensure the smooth running of government throughout the governor’s absence.
