South Africa midfielder Jayden Adams has died at the age of 25, shortly after representing Bafana Bafana at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The South African Football Players Union, SAFPU, confirmed the death of the midfielder, describing itself as “devastated by the untimely passing” of Adams.

Adams featured in three matches for South Africa during the 2026 World Cup and was regarded as one of the country’s promising talents.

His mentor, Brendine Johnson, described his death as a devastating shock to the family, saying they were struggling to come to terms with the loss.

Johnson revealed that Adams had been optimistic about returning to action after the tournament and continuing his career.

“He was really positive about returning after the World Cup and being able to continue, knowing what lies ahead. He was prepared. He loved spending his time at home with his family,” Johnson said.

He added that the family had requested privacy as they mourn the midfielder’s passing.

“Nobody expected this. At this moment, I don’t even have words to say, but we ask that the family’s privacy be respected,” Johnson added.
