Police deny release of kidnapped Igboho victims, say mother and son still in captivity

The Oyo State Police Command has dismissed reports that two kidnap victims in Igboho have regained their freedom, saying they remain in the custody of their abductors.

The victims, Mrs. Kuburat Omowumi and her son, were kidnapped on June 16, 2026, in Igbope.

The clarification followed reports circulating on social media claiming the victims were released after an ultimatum issued by Yoruba Nation agitator, Sunday Adeyemo, popularly known as Sunday Igboho.

In a statement issued on Sunday, the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Olayinka Ayanlade, described the reports and accompanying videos as false and misleading.

“The Oyo State Police Command has taken notice of a video and related online contents alleging that the victims abducted at Igbope on 16th June, 2026, namely Mrs. Kuburat Omowumi and her son, have been rescued.

“The Command wishes to state unequivocally that the claim contained in the circulated video is false, unfounded, and misleading,” the statement read.

The police said efforts were ongoing to secure the safe release of the victims and urged members of the public to verify information before sharing or believing it.

The command reiterated its commitment to rescuing the victims and bringing those responsible for the abduction to justice.
