Tinubu hails Fasoranti at 100, lauds his service to Nigeria
President Bola Tinubu has congratulated elder statesman and Afenifere leader, Pa Reuben Fasoranti, on the occasion of his 100th birthday, describing him as a symbol of integrity, discipline and selfless national service.
In a personally signed statement issued on Saturday ahead of Fasoranti’s centenary celebration on May 11, Tinubu said the elder statesman deserved every honour and recognition for his lifelong contributions to Nigeria’s development and democratic growth.
“My joy knows no bounds as we witness Pa Reuben Fasoranti attain the milestone age of 100,” the President stated.
Tinubu described the Afenifere leader as “a metaphor for integrity, honesty, dedicated service to the nation and true leadership,” noting that Fasoranti’s life reflected uncommon commitment to principle and public service.
The President highlighted Fasoranti’s educational journey, recalling that he studied at the University College, Ibadan, now University of Ibadan, as well as institutions in the United Kingdom and Australia.
He also praised the elder statesman’s contributions to education through teaching and the establishment of schools, including Omolere Nursery and Primary School, Akure High School and St. Frances’ Academy, founded in memory of his late wife.
Tinubu noted that Fasoranti remained one of the prominent disciples of late Chief Obafemi Awolowo and among the last surviving Awoists, having served in the Action Group and later the Unity Party of Nigeria.
According to the President, Fasoranti distinguished himself as Commissioner for Finance in old Ondo State between 1979 and 1983 through prudent management of public resources.
Tinubu further commended Fasoranti’s role during the pro-democracy struggle against military rule, describing him as one of the strong voices that demanded the return of democratic governance in Nigeria.
He also acknowledged Fasoranti’s emergence as the recognised leader of Afenifere following internal disagreements within the group after the death of Pa Abraham Adesanya.
The President referenced difficult moments in the elder statesman’s life, including an assassination attempt during the military era and the 2019 killing of his daughter, Funke Olakunrin, noting that Fasoranti remained resilient despite personal tragedies.
Tinubu also recalled Fasoranti’s support during the 2023 presidential election campaign, saying the elder statesman prayed for his victory and continued to support the Renewed Hope administration.
The President prayed for continued strength, good health and long life for Fasoranti while thanking him for his service to Nigeria and humanity.
