The lawmaker representing Ideato North and South Federal Constituency of Imo State, Hon. Ikenga Imo Ugochinyere, has urged opposition political parties in the country to put aside internal differences and focus on building unity capable of strengthening democratic opposition in Nigeria.

Ugochinyere, founder of the Action People’s Party, APP, specifically called on the African Democratic Congress, ADC, Nigerian Democratic Congress, NDC, and Labour Party, LP, to avoid unnecessary confrontations and media attacks that could weaken the opposition ahead of future political contests.

In a statement issued in Abuja, the federal lawmaker expressed concern over the growing trend of public disagreements, accusations, and internal wranglings among opposition figures, warning that such developments could damage public confidence in alternative political platforms.

According to him, Nigerians expect opposition parties to provide direction, hope, and practical solutions to the country’s numerous challenges rather than engage in divisive battles driven by personal interests.

“This is not the time for unnecessary fights and media attacks against one another. Nigerians expect the opposition to provide direction, hope, and credible alternatives, not endless quarrels that weaken collective strength,” he said.

He noted that the country is currently grappling with economic hardship, insecurity, unemployment, and governance challenges, stressing that opposition parties should concentrate on issue-based politics and constructive engagement.

Ugochinyere warned that persistent hostility among opposition leaders and supporters could undermine efforts to mobilise Nigerians around a common vision for national development and democratic accountability.

He further maintained that personal ambitions and ego-driven politics must give way to the broader interest of strengthening democratic opposition in the country.

“The people are watching. What Nigerians want to see is maturity, unity, and a common purpose. Opposition politics should not become a battlefield of insults and bitterness,” he added.

The lawmaker emphasised that unity remains the strongest tool available to opposition movements seeking to inspire confidence among Nigerians and deepen democratic values.

He therefore called on leaders, stakeholders, and supporters across opposition parties to embrace dialogue, mutual respect, and strategic cooperation in order to build a formidable political front capable of addressing the yearnings of citizens.

According to him, opposition politics should be centred on ideas, solutions, and constructive engagement rather than personal attacks capable of creating further divisions within the political space.
