Former Chelsea defender Jason Cundy has backed Declan Rice to become Arsenal’s next captain if current skipper Martin Odegaard departs the North London club.

Cundy, speaking on talkSPORT, described the England international as a dominant presence in midfield, praising both his defensive strength and attacking influence.

“Defensively, he’s a monster. When he goes forward, he carries the team. He’s brilliant and in control,” Cundy said.

“I think he will be England’s next captain, and I think he will be Arsenal’s next captain.”

Rice, who joined Arsenal from West Ham, has been a key figure in Mikel Arteta’s squad, earning plaudits for his leadership qualities and consistency.

Odegaard, meanwhile, has been linked with a possible move away from the Emirates Stadium at the end of the season, although no official decision has been confirmed.
