INEC Under Amupitan Cannot Be Trusted – Aisha Yesufu

Activist Aisha Yesufu has raised fresh concerns over the credibility of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), insisting that the commission under its current leadership cannot be trusted to conduct free, fair and credible elections.

Yesufu’s reaction follows INEC’s recent clarification over a purported fake X (formerly Twitter) account allegedly linked to its chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan.

The electoral body had earlier dismissed the account, stating that a forensic investigation, conducted with the assistance of independent cybersecurity experts, established that the handle and a viral post attributed to Amupitan were products of digital manipulation and impersonation.

According to INEC, the alleged account, @joashamupitan, and the post “Victory is sure” did not originate from the commission’s chairman.

However, reacting via her verified X handle on Tuesday, Yesufu dismissed the explanation, arguing that the situation raises serious questions about INEC’s integrity and readiness ahead of future elections.

She maintained that the commission’s response to the controversy reflects what she described as desperation, insisting that such developments undermine public trust in the electoral umpire.

“This more than anything shows INEC under Joash Amupitan cannot be trusted to conduct free, fair and credible election,” she wrote, adding that the handling of the matter suggests the commission has “offered itself as a tool to be used.”

The controversy adds to ongoing public debate over INEC’s preparedness and neutrality as Nigeria moves closer to the next general elections.
