Gianni Infantino has confirmed that Iran will participate in the 2026 FIFA World Cup despite ongoing tensions in the Middle East.

Speaking at an economic conference, Infantino said Iran had already qualified and would “for sure” take part in the tournament, expressing hope that the situation in the region would stabilise before kickoff.

The competition, organised by FIFA, will be co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico, with Iran scheduled to play its group matches in the United States.

Iran’s participation had been uncertain following the recent conflict involving the U.S. and Israel, with Tehran previously suggesting a possible boycott and requesting relocation of its matches—requests that were declined.

Infantino stressed that football should remain separate from politics, adding that the tournament aims to promote unity and global connection.

The 2026 World Cup, expanded to 48 teams, is set to begin on June 11.
