The Inspector-General of Police, Tunji Disu, has called for stronger collaboration between the police and the media as part of efforts to improve security across the country.

Disu made the call on Saturday during an interactive session with members of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, Federal Capital Territory chapter, in Abuja.

He described journalists as critical partners in nation-building, noting that their role in information gathering and dissemination remains vital to security operations.

According to him, security agencies alone cannot overcome the nation’s challenges without the active support of citizens and media professionals.

“The country is facing serious security challenges and there is need for all stakeholders to work together. We do not have another country. If you see something, say something because the life you save may be your own,” he said.

The police chief also urged officers to maintain professionalism and treat members of the public with dignity, stressing that their conduct should earn them respect in communities where they serve.

“As a policeman, you should be able to return to places where you have served and be warmly received. That should be a guiding principle for every officer,” he added.

Disu further explained that although the Force Public Relations Officer remains the official spokesperson of the police, journalists can still reach him directly whenever necessary, assuring that his communication channels remain open.

In her remarks, Grace Ike, chairperson of the NUJ FCT Council, pledged continued support of journalists in promoting responsible reportage of security matters.

She said members of the council would continue to deploy journalism as a tool to support efforts aimed at reducing insecurity in the country.

“We are pleased to receive the Inspector-General of Police. His visit shows that he values the media, and we will continue to support every genuine effort to make insecurity a thing of the past,” she said.

Ike also invited the police chief to attend the NUJ FCT Press Week scheduled for May in Abuja.
