The Airline Operators of Nigeria (AON) has slammed the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) over its recent report alleging fare manipulation in the aviation sector.

The FCCPC had disclosed on Thursday that its investigation uncovered instances of ticket price hikes by some domestic airlines during the December 2025 festive season, with fares on certain routes reportedly spiking by as much as N405,000. The commission added that a comparison of peak-season fares with post-peak January 2026 prices showed “materially higher” rates during the festive period.

Reacting, Obiora Okonkwo, AON spokesperson, described the findings as “misguided” and “detrimental” to the survival of domestic airlines. He argued that the commission lacks the technical expertise to interfere in airline pricing.

“They don’t understand airline operations. As far as AON is concerned, they are playing to the gallery and should not be taken seriously,” Okonkwo said.

He added, “We respect all government agencies, but we cannot accept statements that are not based on facts or realities of the industry.”

The FCCPC launched the industry-wide probe in December 2025 following widespread complaints from passengers over sharp increases in airfares during the festive period.
