Operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) have arrested 20 individuals for alleged electoral offences during Saturday’s Federal Capital Territory (FCT) local government elections.
The Commission’s Spokesperson, Dele Oyewale, disclosed this in a statement on Sunday in Abuja, noting that the suspects were apprehended across various parts of the FCT for offences including obstruction of officials, vote buying, and vote selling. The total amount involved in the reported vote-trading was N17,218,700.
Oyewale added that one suspect was caught with N13.5 million in a vehicle parked near a polling unit in Kwali Local Government Area. Arrests were distributed as follows: two in Abaji, nine in Gwagwalada, four in Kuje, and another four in Kwali.
He stated that the suspects will be charged to court upon the completion of investigations.
The EFCC’s intervention comes amid heightened concerns over electoral integrity in the nation’s capital, following reports of vote-buying and other irregularities during the polls.
