The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, has condemned the recent surge of violence in Zamfara State, calling for stronger, coordinated efforts to halt further killings and abductions.
In a statement shared Sunday via the African Union’s official X account, Youssouf described the February 21, 2026 attack in northwestern Nigeria as a “heinous and well-orchestrated terrorist assault” that claimed the lives of over 50 civilians, with several women and children abducted.
The AU emphasized its firm rejection of terrorism and violent extremism in all forms, stressing that attacks targeting vulnerable groups, particularly women and children, constitute severe human rights violations and undermine peace and stability in the region.
“The African Union unequivocally condemns all acts of terrorism and violent extremism against civilian populations,” the statement said. “Such attacks are grave violations of human rights and serious threats to peace, security, and stability.”
Expressing solidarity with the Nigerian government and people, Youssouf extended condolences to families who lost loved ones and wished speedy recovery to those injured. He also reiterated the AU’s support for Nigeria’s ongoing efforts to restore security and promote lasting peace in affected communities.
Youssouf further demanded the immediate, safe, and unconditional release of all abducted women and children, urging perpetrators to set them free without harm. He highlighted the critical need for enhanced collaboration and coordinated strategies to protect civilians and prevent similar tragedies in the future.
The African Union affirmed that its appeal reflects a continued commitment to advancing peace, security, and stability across the continent.
