The Nigerian Senate on Tuesday commenced legislative steps to shift the date of the 2027 presidential and National Assembly elections earlier fixed for February 20, 2027, citing possible clashes with the Ramadan and Lent periods.

The move followed a motion raised during plenary by the Senate Leader, Opeyemi Bamidele, drawing attention to the religious calendar and its potential impact on voter participation and election logistics.

Lawmakers are currently considering the rescission and re-committal of the Electoral Act, 2022 (Repeal and Enactment) Bill, 2026, as part of the process required to effect the proposed adjustment.

Leading debate on the motion, Bamidele said holding the elections during the Ramadan season could negatively affect voter turnout, operational planning, stakeholder participation and the overall credibility and inclusiveness of the polls.

He added that the same date also falls within the Christian Lent period, raising broader concerns about nationwide participation across faith groups.

The elections were earlier scheduled by the Independent National Electoral Commission, which announced February 20, 2027, for the presidential and National Assembly contests.

Deliberations on the proposed date shift were still ongoing as of press time, with further details expected after plenary.
