Breaking: JOHESU Calls Off 84-Day Nationwide Strike After FG Intervention

The Joint Health Sector Unions (JOHESU) has suspended its 84-day nationwide strike following last-minute intervention by the Federal Ministry of Labour.

National President of JOHESU, Kabir Minjibir, confirmed the development on Friday, stating briefly that the industrial action had been put on hold.

“The strike has been suspended,” he said in a message confirming the decision.

The prolonged strike, which affected government-owned hospitals and health institutions across the country, had significantly disrupted medical services, forcing many patients to turn to private facilities for care.

JOHESU, an umbrella body for health workers including pharmacists, laboratory professionals and other allied staff, had embarked on the strike over the Federal Government’s failure to implement the Technical Committee report on the adjustment of the Consolidated Health Salary Structure (CONHESS), submitted since 2021.

The industrial action had drawn support from organised labour, with the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) issuing a 14-day ultimatum to the Federal Government in solidarity with the striking workers.

The suspension followed late-night talks facilitated by officials of the Ministry of Labour, aimed at resolving the lingering dispute.
