Tyla Triumphs as Burna Boy, Davido, Wizkid, Ayra Starr Miss Out at 2026 Grammy Awards

Top Nigerian music stars — Burna Boy, Davido, Wizkid, Ayra Starr and Omah Lay — were unable to secure wins in their nominated categories at the 2026 Grammy Awards held on Sunday night at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, United States.

The ceremony, hosted by South African comedian Trevor Noah, featured strong global competition across major categories, including the Best African Music Performance and Best Global Music Album awards.

South African singer Tyla clinched the Best African Music Performance award, beating a competitive list of nominees that included Burna Boy’s Love, Wizkid and Ayra Starr’s Gimme Dat, Davido and Omah Lay’s With You, as well as Eddy Kenzo and Mehran Matin’s Hope & Love.

Burna Boy also lost in the Best Global Music Album category, where his nominated project was edged out by Eclairer le monde: Light the World by Senegalese music icon Youssou N’Dour.

The latest win marks another Grammy milestone for Tyla, who previously captured the same African music category in 2024 with her breakout hit single Water.

Recall that Nigerian singer Tems won the award in 2025 for her song Love Me JeJe, defeating a lineup that included Yemi Alade, Asake, Wizkid, Davido, Lojay and Burna Boy.

Despite the losses this year, Nigerian artistes maintained a strong presence at the global music event, underscoring Afrobeats’ continued influence on the international stage.
