FG Okays N1trn Kano Metro Rail to Decongest City, Boost Economy — Gov Yusuf

The Federal Government has approved the sum of ₦1 trillion for the construction of a metropolitan rail transport system in Kano State, aimed at easing traffic congestion, improving urban mobility and stimulating economic activities across the state.

Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf disclosed this while addressing members of the Kano State contingent that participated in the 2025 National Qur’anic Recitation Competition held in Borno State.

According to a statement issued on Thursday by the governor’s spokesperson, Sanusi Bature, the proposed rail project will deliver a modern, efficient and affordable mass transit system that will connect major districts and commercial centres within the Kano metropolis.

Governor Yusuf said the rail initiative is expected to significantly enhance the quality of life of residents, boost trade and investment, and position Kano as a major transportation hub in Northern Nigeria.

“The project will provide a reliable mass transit solution, enhance mobility for residents and further strengthen Kano’s economic competitiveness,” the governor said.

He added that the state government would collaborate closely with relevant federal agencies to ensure transparent implementation and seamless execution of the project.

Governor Yusuf expressed appreciation to the Federal Government for approving the project and reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to infrastructure development and policies that support sustainable growth.

It would be recalled that on November 6, 2025, the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) announced plans by the Federal Government to unveil a national railway development roadmap aimed at extending rail connectivity to all the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

The NRC said the roadmap is designed to allow states to access and utilise national rail corridors at no additional cost, as part of efforts to transform Nigeria’s transportation sector.
