AFCON BRONZE: FG SALUTES SUPER EAGLES FOR RESILIENT FINISH

The Federal Government has congratulated the Super Eagles for securing third place at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations after defeating Egypt 4–2 on penalties in Casablanca on Saturday.

The commendation was conveyed by the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, who described the team’s performance as a source of national pride.

“Your performance throughout the tournament brought joy and honour to our nation,” the minister said in a statement issued on Saturday. “You upheld Nigeria’s rich football heritage with skill, courage and unity. From the group stage to the final whistle, you showed belief in one another and inspired millions of Nigerians at home and abroad.”

Idris noted that the bronze medal further strengthened Nigeria’s impressive record in AFCON history, stressing that the Super Eagles remained a dominant force in African football.

“The discipline and fighting spirit displayed against strong opponents demonstrate the true Nigerian character. You reminded us that teamwork and patriotism remain the foundation of our success,” he added.

The minister also applauded the coaching crew and support staff for their commitment, urging the team to build on the achievement ahead of future competitions.

“Though the ultimate prize slipped away, this medal was earned with dignity. It belongs to every Nigerian who stood by the team throughout the tournament,” he said.

Nigeria reached the third-place match after losing 4–2 on penalties to Senegal in Wednesday’s semifinal, while Egypt were edged out by host Morocco. Senegal and Morocco are billed to clash in Sunday’s final.

The victory over the Pharaohs has drawn widespread praise, with fans and former internationals hailing the team’s determination and goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali’s heroics in the shootout.
