Court to Deliver Ruling on Malami, Wife, Son’s Bail on January 7

The Federal High Court in Abuja has scheduled January 7 to rule on the bail applications filed by former Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, SAN, alongside his wife, Bashir Asabe, and their son, Abubakar Abdulaziz.
Justice Emeka Nwite fixed the date on Friday after hearing submissions from the defence, led by Joseph Daudu, SAN, and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), represented by Ekele Iheanacho, SAN.
The EFCC, in charge number FHC/ABJ/CR/700/2025, listed Malami, his wife, and son as the first, second, and third defendants in a money laundering case. The anti-graft agency accused the trio of engaging in suspicious financial transactions and attempting to conceal the illicit origin of billions of naira through bank accounts and property acquisitions spanning Abuja, Kano, and Kebbi.
The alleged offences reportedly took place between 2015 and 2025, encompassing Malami’s tenure as AGF under the administration of the late former President Muhammadu Buhari.
According to the EFCC, Malami, his son, and Asabe conspired to disguise the source of funds, acquire property indirectly, and retain sums they allegedly knew were proceeds of unlawful activity. The agency noted that these actions contravened provisions of the Money Laundering (Prohibition and Prevention) Acts of 2011 (as amended) and 2022.
The court’s decision on the bail applications is highly anticipated.
