The Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO) has assured Nigerians that electricity supply across the country is expected to improve within the next 24 to 48 hours.

In a statement released on Tuesday, NISO attributed the recent decline in power generation to the explosion along the Escravos-Lagos gas pipeline (ELP). The incident caused a sharp reduction in electricity generation as several gas-fired power plants recorded low output, resulting in a shortfall in electricity supply to consumers nationwide.

The operator confirmed it is closely monitoring repair works being carried out by the Nigerian Gas Processing and Transportation Company (NGPTC), a subsidiary of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC). NISO stated that the vandalised pipeline is nearing restoration and is expected to be fully operational within the next 24 to 48 hours, allowing affected power plants to resume normal generation.

Speaking on the matter, Minister of Power, Bayo Adelabu, acknowledged the inconvenience caused to households and businesses due to the disruption. According to a statement by Bolaji Tunji, special adviser on strategic communications and media relations to the minister, Adelabu said the drop in power supply was compounded by vandalism on critical gas infrastructure.

The minister revealed that he had engaged with key stakeholders in the power sector, including NISO, the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), electricity generation companies (GenCos), and distribution companies (DisCos), to expedite the restoration of gas supply and boost electricity generation during the Yuletide season.

Adelabu expressed optimism that normal power supply levels would be restored gradually within the 24 to 48-hour window. He further directed all relevant agencies to intensify their efforts to adhere strictly to the timeline.

Beyond the immediate response, the minister highlighted that the government is accelerating long-term measures to diversify the nation’s energy mix, strengthen grid resilience, and deploy advanced surveillance technologies to protect critical infrastructure.

“We understand the frustration this situation has caused Nigerians. The Federal Government, through the Ministry of Power, is working round the clock to resolve the issue with utmost urgency,” the minister said.
