INEC Declines Recognition of Turaki-Led PDP Faction Over Court Disputes

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has refused to recognise the Kabiru Turaki-led National Working Committee (NWC) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), citing ongoing court cases and existing judicial orders.

In a letter dated December 22, 2025, and signed by INEC Secretary, Dr. Rose Oriaran-Anthony, the commission said it could not accede to demands to acknowledge or upload on its website the list of national officers reportedly elected at the PDP National Convention held on November 15 and 16 in Ibadan.

INEC explained that its decision was guided by subsisting court rulings and unresolved legal matters relating to the party’s leadership tussle. The commission warned that recognising any factional officers while the matter remains before the courts would be improper.

The PDP has been embroiled in a leadership crisis, with rival factions claiming legitimacy over the party’s national leadership structure. INEC’s latest position is likely to complicate efforts by the Turaki faction to assert control over the party at the national level.
