Wilfred Ndidi has been officially named captain of the Super Eagles ahead of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco.

The 29-year-old Besiktas midfielder takes over leadership following the retirements of William Troost-Ekong and Ahmed Musa, the former senior team captains. Ndidi, who was vice-captain, assumed the role after the team’s arrival in Morocco, where they held their first training session.

Speaking with team officials, Ndidi said he had consulted with senior players about his new role and emphasized the need for collective effort from both players and staff.

“It’s a huge responsibility,” he said. “With the support of my teammates and staff, I believe the transition will be smooth. We are all in this together.”

Ndidi also reflected on Nigeria’s failure to qualify for the 2026 World Cup but expressed optimism that AFCON 2025 offers an opportunity for redemption.

“Missing out on the World Cup was disappointing, but this is a new chance to correct past mistakes, make Nigerians proud, and enjoy the game together,” he said.

The Super Eagles are set to begin their campaign against Tanzania on December 23, with Ndidi leading the team from the front.
