The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has criticised the Senate for what it described as the trivial handling of Thursday’s ambassadorial screening of high-profile nominees.

During the session, the Red Chamber allowed several nominees — including Femi Fani-Kayode, Reno Omokri and Prof. Mahmood Yakubu — to “take a bow and go,” a move the party says undermines the gravity of appointing individuals who will represent Nigeria abroad.

ADC’s spokesman, Bolaji Abdullahi, faulted the lawmakers for reducing a serious national assignment to a mere political formality.

“We are not surprised, but we are disappointed that a process as serious as screening those who will represent Nigeria abroad has been reduced to something so trivial,” Abdullahi lamented.

He warned that some of the nominees might not survive more rigorous diplomatic scrutiny in countries with stricter vetting procedures.

“If posted to serious countries, many of these people would be rejected,” he added.
