Confusion Deepens as PDP Announces Bayelsa Deputy Governor’s Death

Confusion yesterday trailed reports on the alleged death of Bayelsa Deputy Governor, Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, following conflicting information from the state government and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Ewhrudjakpo had earlier on Thursday collapsed in his office and was rushed to the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Yenagoa, where he was said to be in critical condition.
However, hours later, the PDP announced his death in a statement issued by its National Publicity Secretary, Ini Ememobong, saying the party received “with deep shock” news of the deputy governor’s passing.
The statement described Ewhrudjakpo as a steadfast party man who upheld politics of conviction and integrity.
It added that his death had thrown the National Working Committee, led by Kabiru Tanimu Turaki (SAN), and the entire party into mourning.
The PDP praised the late deputy governor as a leader whose life was anchored on principle and character, praying for the repose of his soul and offering condolences to the government and people of Bayelsa State.
But as of press time, the Bayelsa State Government had not confirmed his death.
When contacted, Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Daniel Alabrah, said an official statement would be issued once the government verified the situation.
Governor Douye Diri defected from the PDP to the All Progressives Congress (APC) on November 4, while Ewhrudjakpo remained in the PDP.
The uncertainty over the deputy governor’s status has left residents and political observers awaiting official clarification.
