Pay Your Taxes, Show Your Patriotism, FG Charges Nigerians

The Federal Government has launched a nationwide campaign, “My Nigeria, My Responsibility”, aimed at deepening patriotism through active citizen participation, including tax compliance.

The initiative was flagged off on Monday at the State House, Abuja, by the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, who represented President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. The campaign seeks to instil a sense of responsibility in Nigerians, highlighting that patriotism goes beyond words to include daily actions that contribute to national growth.

Speaking at the event, Minister Idris described patriotism as “an active verb” and stressed that it is demonstrated through personal values, commitment to national progress, and honesty in public life.

“Patriotism is in the taxes you pay. By paying your fair share, you are directly investing in the school your child attends, the road your business uses, and the security that guards your home,” the minister said.

He underscored that the country’s destiny lies in the collective efforts of its 200 million citizens and not only in the hands of government leaders. Idris also highlighted President Tinubu’s key policy reforms, including the removal of fuel subsidy, foreign exchange reforms, tax justice initiatives, and digitalized revenue mobilisation.

In addition, the minister announced plans to inaugurate the National Media and Information Literacy Institute in February 2026, a move aimed at equipping citizens with skills to verify information, resist misinformation, and engage responsibly online.

Idris further urged Nigerians to embrace the values enshrined in the newly adopted Citizens’ Charter of National Values, which include integrity, patriotism, diligence, tolerance, and excellence.

“The President has provided the canvas of stability and vision. It is up to all of us to pick up the brush and paint together the masterpiece of a new Nigeria through our values, our taxes, our stories, and our actions,” he said.

The campaign signals the government’s intent to link civic responsibility, particularly tax compliance, to nation-building, urging Nigerians to play an active role in shaping the country’s future.
