DSS, Military Contact Bandits to Free 38 Kwara Church Worshippers

The Department of State Services (DSS) and the military have successfully secured the release of 38 worshippers abducted from the Christ Apostolic Church (CAC) in Eruku, Kwara State, on November 18.

Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser on Information and Strategy to President Bola Tinubu, said a non-kinetic approach was used to ensure the captives were freed unharmed.

“After the incident, the DSS and military engaged the kidnappers directly. The bandits were aware of the consequences of not cooperating with government demands,” Onanuga said on Prime Time, Arise Television, Monday.

President Tinubu, who announced the release on November 23, commended the security agencies’ efforts.

“Thanks to the efforts of our security forces, all 38 worshippers have been rescued. I am closely monitoring the security situation nationwide to ensure the safety of every Nigerian,” he said.

Onanuga explained that a direct military assault could have been risky, as abductees are often used as human shields. He added that the military would decide on the next course of action against the kidnappers.

No details have been disclosed on whether ransom was paid or specific negotiations took place.
