Jonathan says 2027 election will test Nigeria’s democratic maturity

Former President Goodluck Jonathan has described the 2027 general election as a test of Nigeria’s democratic maturity, urging Nigerians to prioritise peace, unity and justice.

Jonathan made the call in his Independence Day message on Thursday as Nigeria marked its 66th anniversary of independence.

The former President urged citizens to remain patriotic and committed to national unity as the country prepares for the next electoral season.

“In a few months, we will enter another electoral season, a period that will test our democratic maturity. I urge all Nigerians to remain patriotic and prioritise actions that safeguard peace, unity, and justice,” he said.

Reflecting on Nigeria’s journey since independence, Jonathan said the country had faced several challenges but had continued to overcome them through the resilience of its people.

He urged Nigerians to remain hopeful and united while working towards a better future.

Jonathan said Nigeria had significant opportunities ahead if its diversity and human and natural resources were properly harnessed for sustainable development.

He particularly encouraged young Nigerians to remain hopeful and courageous in working towards a prosperous future.

“The years ahead hold immense possibilities, provided we harness our diversity and our abundant natural and human resources to drive sustainable development,” he said.

The former President, however, said achieving sustainable development would require greater responsibility from leaders at all levels.

He called for stronger commitment to good governance, accountability, personal sacrifice and respect for the rule of law in addressing the country’s social and economic challenges.

“To leaders at all levels, this moment demands absolute responsibility and deeper patriotism,” Jonathan said.

He also urged Nigerians to remain committed to national service and work towards building a peaceful, secure and equitable country for present and future generations.
