Dozens arrested in DR Congo protests over proposed third-term bid

Dozens of people have been arrested in the Democratic Republic of Congo, DRC, following protests against proposed constitutional amendments that could pave the way for President Felix Tshisekedi to seek a third term.

 

The protests broke out on Tuesday in Kinshasa, the capital, and other major cities, with police using tear gas and warning shots to disperse demonstrators, according to Reuters.

 

The demonstrations were organised by Coalition Article 64, C64, a broad opposition alliance campaigning against the proposed constitutional changes. Videos shared on social media showed protesters carrying flags belonging to different political parties.

 

Tshisekedi, who has been president since 2019, is due to complete his second five-year term in 2028. The current constitution limits presidents to two terms.

 

However, the 63-year-old president said last month that he would be willing to serve a third term if “the people wish it.”

 

The proposed changes have therefore raised concerns among opposition groups, who argue that altering the constitutional framework could allow Tshisekedi to remain in power beyond 2028.

 

In June, the DRC Senate passed a bill providing for the holding of referendums in the country, months before Tshisekedi made his comments about a possible third term.

 

The protests reportedly intensified after clashes broke out between supporters and opponents of the president, prompting police intervention.

 

Martin Fayulu, a former presidential candidate and one of the leaders of C64, said the opposition was considering filing an international complaint against Tshisekedi over alleged violence against opposition activists.

 

The demonstrations add to growing political tensions in the DRC as the country approaches the end of Tshisekedi’s second constitutional term.
