‘Babangida impacted Nigeria distinctly’ — Tinubu celebrates ex-leader at 85

President Bola Tinubu has congratulated former military president, General Ibrahim Babangida (retd.), on his 85th birthday, describing him as an elder statesman whose leadership left a lasting mark on Nigeria.

Tinubu, in a statement by his spokesman, Bayo Onanuga, described Babangida, popularly known as IBB, as an outstanding leader whose military career culminated in his emergence as Head of State following the 1985 coup.

The President said Babangida’s eight-year rule had a significant impact on Nigeria’s political, economic and geographical development.

“Like him or not, former President Babangida impacted Nigeria in ways no other leader has. His eight-year reign left enduring marks on our political, economic, and geographic landscape,” Tinubu said.

He said Babangida expanded the nation’s economy, established infrastructure and created agencies and institutions that continue to contribute to national development.

“But for his foresight, wisdom, and sense of equity and fairness, many states in the federation might not exist today,” the President added.

Tinubu said Babangida’s contributions to national development had secured his place in Nigeria’s history.

The President also acknowledged the former military leader’s continued role in national affairs, noting that Babangida had continued to offer counsel and guidance to the country despite his retirement from public office.

“Even in retirement, living a quiet life at his Minna Hilltop residence in Niger State, General Babangida continues to offer valuable counsel and guidance to the nation. His advice and wise counsel remain an inspiration to younger generations,” he said.

Tinubu wished the former military president good health and renewed strength, praying that Almighty Allah would grant him many more years.
