2027: Opposition parties begin talks on single candidate

Opposition political parties have begun consultations on forming a stronger alliance and possibly presenting a single candidate for the 2027 presidential election.

 

The discussions are being facilitated by the G-100 platform, which has scheduled a summit in Abuja for August 18, 2026.

 

The summit follows consultations between G-100 representatives and leaders of six opposition parties — the African Democratic Congress, Allied Peoples Movement, National Democratic Congress, Peoples Democratic Party, Peoples Redemption Party and Social Democratic Party.

 

In a statement signed by Salihu Lukman on behalf of the G-100, the group said the consultations had established a basis for deeper discussions on how opposition parties could work together to provide a credible alternative to Nigerians in 2027.

 

The group said its representatives had met with national chairmen, presidential candidates and running mates of the parties.

 

It explained that the meetings were deliberately held away from the media to allow participants to discuss sensitive issues openly without pressure from public scrutiny.

 

According to the G-100, the consultations revealed a broad agreement on the need for greater cooperation among opposition parties, although achieving such unity would require significant compromise and sacrifice.

 

The group said, “There has been a clear recognition of the need for Nigeria’s opposition parties to work more closely together ahead of the 2027 general elections.”

 

It added that the parties recognised that a credible opposition could only emerge through “sacrifice, compromise and a willingness to place the larger interests of the country above narrow partisan or individual considerations.”

 

The August 18 summit is expected to begin discussions on the structure and modalities of such cooperation, including the possibility of producing a common presidential candidate.

 

However, the G-100 said it would not dictate the outcome of the discussions or impose any particular arrangement on the parties.

 

“The G-100 does not presume to dictate the outcome of these conversations. Our role is to facilitate dialogue, build confidence and help create the conditions in which the participating political parties can openly consider the difficult questions of cooperation, sacrifice, accommodation and collective action,” it said.

 

The initiative is also expected to draw from the Ibadan Declaration, which called for opposition parties to explore a credible pathway towards presenting a sole candidate in the 2027 election.

 

The G-100 said the consultations represented only the beginning of a potentially lengthy negotiation process, stressing that political goodwill would have to be translated into a practical framework acceptable to the participating parties.

 

The group argued that continued fragmentation among opposition parties could weaken their ability to mount an effective challenge in 2027.

 

It said, “At this critical moment in our national journey, fragmentation among those seeking to provide that alternative serves neither the opposition nor the Nigerian people.”

 

The development comes amid increasing efforts by opposition politicians to form alliances ahead of the 2027 general elections, with possible questions surrounding presidential candidacy, power-sharing and the structure of any proposed coalition.

 

The G-100 pledged to continue facilitating the process in what it described as an inclusive and respectful manner, while urging political leaders to demonstrate patience, courage and sacrifice.

 

The August 18 summit could therefore serve as an early test of whether Nigeria’s opposition parties can move beyond individual ambitions and forge a common political platform ahead of 2027.
