The match, scheduled for 9pm local time (8pm GMT) at the Moulay El Hassan Stadium, will also determine the first African team to secure automatic qualification for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil.
The fixture is a repeat of the 2022 WAFCON final, when South Africa defeated Morocco 2-1 in Rabat to win their first continental title.
Hildah Magaia scored twice for South Africa in the 63rd and 71st minutes before Rosella Ayane reduced the deficit for Morocco in the 80th minute.
Morocco are seeking their second appearance at the Women’s World Cup after making their debut in 2023, while victory on Saturday would take South Africa to their third global tournament, following appearances in 2019 and 2023.
The hosts reached the quarter-finals for the third consecutive WAFCON edition after topping Group A with wins over Kenya and Algeria before drawing 0-0 with Senegal.
The result ended Morocco’s run of scoring in 14 successive WAFCON matches but extended their impressive defensive record at the tournament.
Morocco became the first team to complete the group stage without conceding a goal and have gone 271 minutes without allowing an opponent to score.
Goalkeeper Khadija Er-Rmichi has kept three clean sheets at the tournament, taking her overall WAFCON tally to six in 15 appearances.
The hosts are aiming to reach the semi-finals for the third time. They have won both of their previous quarter-final appearances, beating Botswana 2-1 in 2022 and Mali 3-1 in 2024.
Morocco coach Jorge Vilda, who guided the team to the final at the previous edition, has lost only one of his nine WAFCON matches in charge. The defeat came against Nigeria in the 2024 final, while he has recorded five wins and three draws in his other eight matches.
South Africa, meanwhile, are appearing in the quarter-finals for the third time after reaching this stage in 2022 and 2024.
Banyana Banyana are targeting a 12th semi-final appearance and a 10th consecutive appearance in the last four, having reached the semi-finals at every edition since their group-stage elimination in 2004.
Desiree Ellis’ side ended a slow start to the tournament with a 1-0 victory over Burkina Faso in their final group match.
The victory ended a five-match winless run in open play and gave South Africa their first clean sheet since their goalless quarter-final against Senegal at the previous edition.
South Africa have not won any of their last three WAFCON knockout matches in open play, with their most recent victory coming against Morocco in the 2022 final.
Under Ellis, their knockout record stands at four wins, three draws and three defeats from 10 matches.
Thembi Kgatlana will be one of South Africa’s key attacking threats after scoring the winner against Burkina Faso.
The goal took her WAFCON tally to eight and her goals at the current tournament to two. South Africa have won six of the seven WAFCON matches in which Kgatlana has scored, with the exception being their 2-2 draw against Côte d’Ivoire in the current edition.
Saturday’s encounter will also present South Africa with a difficult historical challenge. It will be their eighth WAFCON meeting with a tournament host.
The South Africans have won only one of their previous seven matches against hosts, defeating Morocco in the 2022 final, while losing the other six.
They have also never kept a clean sheet against a host nation in seven previous WAFCON matches.
South Africa have faced hosts four times in the knockout rounds, losing to Nigeria in the 2002 semi-finals and Equatorial Guinea in the 2008 and 2012 finals before their victory over Morocco in 2022.
With both sides carrying significant continental history into Saturday’s encounter, Morocco will hope to use home advantage to reach another semi-final and move closer to a maiden WAFCON title.
South Africa, meanwhile, will be looking to continue their strong record in the competition and begin their title defence with a return to the final four.
Beyond the rivalry and history, the immediate prize remains the same for both teams: a semi-final place and automatic qualification for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
