Malawi stun Super Falcons 3-2, end Nigeria’s unbeaten record against WAFCON debutants

Malawi recorded a historic 3-2 victory over Nigeria on Tuesday night, ending the Super Falcons’ long-standing unbeaten record against debutant teams at the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).

Playing their first-ever match at the continental tournament, the Scorchers produced a memorable performance at the Al Madina Stadium in Rabat to defeat the 10-time African champions.

Temwa Chawinga and her sister, Tabitha Chawinga, inspired Malawi’s victory with three second-half goals, while Rasheedat Ajibade and Uchenna Kanu scored Nigeria’s two goals.

The defeat marked Nigeria’s first-ever loss to a debutant nation in WAFCON history.

Before Tuesday’s encounter, the Super Falcons had faced tournament debutants 17 times since the competition began in 1998, recording 16 wins and one draw without suffering a defeat.

Malawi’s victory not only secured a dream start to their maiden WAFCON campaign but also ended one of Nigeria’s most enduring records in the competition.
