US House committee summons FIFA President Infantino over Trump administration ties

FIFA President Gianni Infantino has been asked to appear before the United States House Judiciary Committee as part of an investigation into the world football governing body’s relationship with President Donald Trump’s administration.

 

The inquiry was initiated by the ranking Democrat on the House Judiciary Committee, Jamie Raskin, in a letter dated Sunday.

 

According to The Athletic, Raskin is seeking documents detailing FIFA’s interactions with the Trump administration, including any benefits or exchanges involving the President, members of his administration, their families, or affiliated entities.

 

The lawmaker specifically requested “a list of anything of value (including transfer of money, gifts, prizes, awards, or public appearances) given to President Trump, members of his Administration, or their family members, or any entity associated with them, such as The Trump Organization.”

 

The investigation follows controversy during the 2026 FIFA World Cup, when President Trump reportedly contacted Infantino to request a review of the one-match suspension handed to United States forward Folarin Balogun ahead of the Round of 16 clash against Belgium.

 

FIFA later overturned the suspension, allowing Balogun to feature in the match, while maintaining that the decision was made independently and without external influence.

 

The committee’s investigation is expected to examine the nature of FIFA’s relationship with the Trump administration and whether any improper influence was exerted on decisions made by the governing body.
