The announcement was made before thousands of fans at Comic-Con’s Hall H, where British actor David Jonsson was unveiled as the film’s lead. Jonsson, known for his roles in HBO’s Industry and the 2025 film The Long Walk, will portray the son of T’Challa, the original Black Panther played by the late Chadwick Boseman.
Addressing the audience, Jonsson expressed gratitude for joining the franchise.
“Thank you to this amazing family that I have the honor and the privilege and the blessing to join,” he said, adding, “I actually don’t want to say too much because I want to let this screen do the talk.”
Oscar-winning filmmaker Ryan Coogler, who directed the first two Black Panther films, will return to direct the third installment.
Speaking at the event alongside Jonsson and Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige, Coogler revealed that the story will follow T’Challa’s son as he comes of age and embraces his father’s legacy as the Black Panther.
The original Black Panther, released in 2018, became a global success, grossing $1.3 billion at the box office. The film starred Chadwick Boseman alongside Michael B. Jordan, Angela Bassett, Lupita Nyong’o, Forest Whitaker, Danai Gurira and Letitia Wright. Boseman died in 2020 at the age of 43 after battling colon cancer.
Comic-Con concludes on Sunday, July 26.
