NIHSA Warns 14 States Of Flood Risk

The Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency, NIHSA, has warned that 14 states are at risk of flooding between July 14 and July 20 due to rising water levels during the rainy season.

The affected states include Adamawa, Akwa Ibom, Anambra, Bauchi, Benue, Borno, Cross River, Edo, Enugu, Imo, Kaduna, Lagos, Niger and Plateau.

Director-General of NIHSA, Umar Mohammed, said the advisory was based on the agency’s latest hydrological forecast, which identified 16 monitoring stations as high-risk locations for possible flooding along major river channels.

He urged state governments, emergency management agencies and residents of flood-prone communities to strengthen early warning systems, prepare evacuation plans and intensify public awareness to reduce the impact of possible flooding.

NIHSA also advised residents to clear blocked drainage channels, avoid driving or walking through flooded roads and stay updated with official flood forecasts, while emergency agencies were urged to pre-position relief materials for swift response if necessary.
