Tinubu Extends Customs CG Adeniyi’s Tenure by Six Months

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved a final six-month tenure extension for the Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Mr Adewale Adeniyi, allowing him to remain in office until February 2027.s

The extension, according to a statement signed by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Mr Bayo Onanuga, is aimed at enabling Adeniyi to consolidate the implementation of the National Single Window project and ensure a smooth leadership transition within the Customs Service.

The statement noted that Adeniyi’s current tenure was due to expire on August 1, 2026, but the additional six months would provide the necessary window to complete ongoing reforms and succession plans.

During the extension period, the Comptroller-General is expected to work closely with the Nigeria Customs Service Board to facilitate the promotion of qualified officers to the rank of Comptroller of Customs and oversee the compulsory retirement of officers who have either attained the age of 60 or completed 35 years in service.

Adeniyi joined the Nigeria Customs Service after graduating from Obafemi Awolowo University in the late 1980s and steadily rose through the ranks.

He became a Deputy Comptroller in 2012, Comptroller in 2017, Assistant Comptroller-General in 2020, Acting Deputy Comptroller-General in January 2023, before being appointed Comptroller-General by President Tinubu in June 2023.

The Presidency expressed confidence that the extension would help sustain ongoing reforms and strengthen institutional continuity within the Customs Service.
